Countdown To Opening Night!

ARSENIC AND OLD LACEPoisoners never go out of style – this timeless hit tells the story of two otherwise charming elderly ladies determined to get rid of all their lonely lodgers in the name of mercy.

Drama critic Mortimer Brewster’s engagement announcement is upended when he discovers a corpse in his elderly aunts’ window seat. Mortimer rushes to tell Abby and Martha before they stumble upon the body themselves, only to learn that the two old women aren’t just aware of the dead man in their parlor, they killed him! Between his aunts’ penchant for poisoning wine, a brother who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt, and another brother using plastic surgery to hide from the police – not to mention Mortimer’s own hesitancy about marriage – it’ll be a miracle if Mortimer makes it to his wedding. Arsenic and Old Lace is a classic dark comedy about the only thing more deadly than poison: family.

INITIAL AUDITION FORMAT:

At the initial audition, everyone will read one monologue of their choice from the options provided below.

O’Hara
Did they have that in the play you saw tonight? Gee, they practically stole that from the second act of my play. Why, in the second act, just before the… I’d better begin at the beginning. It opens in my mother’s dressing room, where I was born, only I ain’t born yet. Well, she’s sitting there making up, see. When all of a sudden through the door, a man with a black mustache walks in, turns to my mother and says, “Miss Latour, will you marry me?” He doesn’t know she’s pregnant.

Mortimer
Oh, you think people in plays act intelligently. I wish you had to sit through some of the ones I have to sit through. Take the little opus I saw tonight for instance. In this play, there’s a man… he’s supposed to be bright… he knows he’s in a house with murderers, he ought to know he’s in danger, he’s even been warned to get out of the house… but dose he go? No, he stays there. Now I ask you, doctor, is that what an intelligent person would do?

Elain
You were supposed to take me to dinner and the theater tonight. You called it off. You asked me to marry you. I said I would. And five minutes later you threw me out of the house. Tonight, just after your brother tries to strangle me, you want to chase me home. Now, listen, Mr. Brewster; before I go home, I want to know where I stand. Do you love me?

Abby
You see, Mr. Midgerly came here looking for a room and it didn’t seem right for that lovely room to be going to waste when there were so many people who needed it. All his kith and kin were dead, and it left him so forlorn and unhappy. Then when his heart attack came, and he sat dead in that chair, looking so peaceful… remember Martha? We made up our minds then and there that if we could help other lonely old men to that same peace, we would.
