You remember the plot. You love the characters.
You know "the song." It's no less than the stage adaptation of one of the
most celebrated and beloved films of all time.
The classic story is set around 1927, just as the
Hollywood film industry is beginning to make "talking pictures."
Overnight, stars of the silent screen found their careers destroyed by the need
to vocalize their parts. Caught in the transition as Tinsel Town's
reigning king and queen of the silent pictures - Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont.
While Lockwood makes the transition with ease, Lina has a voice that could
curdle vinegar.
Adding to the pair's difficulties is the fact that the
studio is promoting the idea of a romance between the two. Don meets and
falls in love with Kathy Selden, an aspiring singer and dancer whose beautiful
speaking and singing voice make her a possible vocal double for Lina. End
to end, the show's mix of backstage shenanigans, romance, creative
quick-thinking and friendship have made it one of the most beloved musicals of
all time, and to see the show in 2007 is as great a joy as it ever was.
